Scot Case serves as the Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the National Retail Federation where he helps companies of all shapes and sizes learn how to use their business to make the world a better place—to include positively impacting sustainability efforts. While previous sustainability efforts in retail tended to focus largely on wood, jewelry or electronics—fashion is now seeing a period of renewed interest in addressing sustainability concerns.
There are many ways that the fashion industry is approaching sustainability efforts, with the largest emphasis being within the supply chain and materials space. Retailers are now looking to replace existing fabrics with more renewable or eco-friendly fabrics, changing production methods to minimize waste, and promoting circularity and resale efforts. And this emphasis is not just top-down, but also being demanded by the consumers with renewed interest in used or more sustainable products.
One of the biggest opportunities for improving sustainability is for businesses to really invest in their resale opportunities. Scot doesn’t believe this to just be a trend, but instead a meaningful approach to solving a complex problem. With so many different options for how to improve sustainability, embracing circularity and resale is often a great first step.
