Conversation with Stanislas Joly, Joly Design General Manager

"The challenge is all the more important as the end consumer expects brands to take on these environmental responsibilities."

Can you please introduce yourself?

I am the General Manager of Joly Design, a furniture design studio.

The studio was created by my father 40 years ago. Five years ago, when he retired, some employees and myself took over the business. Our studio is specialized in furniture design and world renowned in the upholstered furniture industry (sofas, armchairs and beds).

Thanks to our furniture design, we provide global consulting for product development: marketing studies to determine the most strategic developments for our partners and then product creation, once these priorities are well established.

We place the voice of the end customer at the heart of the product creation and development process, thanks to the analysis of key market figures and consumer insights.

Are you happy to return to the big tradeshows?

Yes, very happy: to get together with other professionals, to exchange ideas, to see and touch the designs presented at the show (...), we had missed all this terribly.

The whole team was able to exchange ideas and feel the current creative vibe. We returned to the agency energized and inspired.

What are the most noteworthy trends for 2022 and beyond?

In today’s post-pandemic era, home is more than ever considered a personal refuge, as well as a daily office. Interior design is a great way to express one’s personality and uniqueness.

In this context, product trends are emerging:

  • Nature and ecology: organic, sensual, rounded shapes and materials that were already present but are now becoming fixtures of our interior.
  • A desire to create a ‘cocoon’, with visually comforting pieces, accentuated by padding, quilting and ribbing, which offers an enveloping comfort.
  • Retro models updated with glamor and boldness.
  • Eclecticism and a personal mix of styles.

How do eco-friendly materials fit into these new trends?

Awareness of the role of the designer and manufacturer in promoting more responsible interior design is growing, and that’s a good thing. Our industry has only recently begun to address these fundamental issues. Habits need to change – quickly.

The inclusion of eco-responsible materials – right from the product design phase – is one solution. This is something we have started doing at the agency: we are committed to raising awareness among our partners so that together we can find solutions with the least impact, adapted to their production tools.

The challenge is all the more important as the end consumer expects brands to take on these environmental responsibilities.

In closing, would you like to say anything about The Salone del mobile in Milan?

Even if the 2021 edition in Milan was downsized due to the health context, the showrooms of brands, located in the heart of the city, made up for the exhibitions of the show with very beautiful creative proposals.

We are actively preparing new features for next year and hope that the 2022 edition of the Milan show will be flamboyant!
