Established more than forty years ago, Istituto Modartech is a fashion institute in Tuscany, Italy.

Located in Paggio industrial space, one of Italy’s most prominent fashion districts, the school offers students a unique educational experience with a curriculum that combines both traditional craftsmanship and new technology.

Given its ideal location, the school has developed strong ties with renowned fashion companies, providing its students with numerous internship and job opportunities. Istituto Modartech’s extensive knowledge of the industry and its needs led to its decision to expand its core curriculum to three main disciplines: Apparel, Footwear and Communications. In the early 2000s, the school turned its attention to technology, making it the driving force behind its three-year B.A. program.

Istituto Modartech has been a Lectra partner since the early 2000s and credits Lectra for being instrumental in helping it find its technological edge. “When we decided to redirect our focus towards fashion technology, Lectra came to mind immediately,” says Alessandro Bertini, the school’s director. Lectra’s solutions, Kaledo, Modaris 3D and Diamino, are largely employed in the school’s classrooms. Modartech’s students are so well-versed in Lectra technology that the school is now widely recognized by industry insiders for its rigorous CAD patternmaking courses.

In addition to equipping students with the right skills, one of the main reasons Modartech chose Lectra was for its extensive industry presence, which makes it easier for students to get their foot in the door once they graduate.

“Lectra is undoubtedly a market leader. Because so many prestigious fashion companies use its solutions, our students are always a step ahead when it comes to internship and employment opportunities."

Bertini is also quick to add that Lectra’s commitment to providing students around the world with these solutions was also a major factor in their decision. “Lectra plays an important role in contributing to fashion education. By providing students with licenses, they’ve opened up a dialogue on fashion technology and how it can be used as an educational tool. Lectra has also fostered a culture of knowledge-sharing and we are proud to be part of their network.”

Patternmaking at its best

Piero Santini, a patternmaking instructor and Lectra specialist at Modartech, credits the company’s CAD solutions for making his students attractive candidates in the competitive job market. A Lectra user for over fifteen years, he identifies two ways in which Lectra helps his students become better designers. “Firstly, the solutions help them get a better grasp of the entire design-to-production process within a business context. This way, they will be able to design while envisioning it. Secondly, our students work far more efficiently thanks to these solutions. Lectra helps them accomplish their tasks with greater speed and accuracy, which improves the overall quality of their designs. This is why we have decided to go one step further with Lectra by integrating Modaris 3D into our program.”

Lectra also makes teaching exciting for Santini. “As my course content is largely influenced by these solutions, I constantly keep myself updated with Lectra’s new solution upgrades and products. In a way, the evolution of my course content parallels that of Lectra,” says Santini.
